NextGenerationEU is a temporary recovery instrument endowed with more than 800 billion euros that will help repair the immediate economic and social damage caused by the coronavirus pandemic. This European Funds provide an enormous opportunity to realize projects that can transform Murcia and its districts.
Aguas de Murcia is fully aware and is working from the beginning in the definition of projects, making a continuous monitoring of these funds, and seeking the collaboration and involvement of the various administrations, requesting, hand in hand with the City of Murcia, 120 million euros.
These are historical, very complex needs that require an integrated vision and whose achievement would allow us to transform the territory.
One of the main objectives sought in these projects is to better prepare the municipality for the floods that occur in different areas caused by heavy rains and minimize the pollutant load in the water that reaches the Segura river, protecting the inhabited areas of the water bodies before overflowing of sewage systems in rainy episodes.
There are initiatives for the environmental improvement of the Segura river that contemplate the construction of anti-DSU (discharge of the unitary sanitation system) tanks, as well as the execution of relief chambers.
The most important projects are those related to water reuse in Murcia and its districts, digitalization and renewable energies. Water scarcity and drought are an increasingly present reality. This problem is widespread throughout Europe, mainly caused by the overexploitation of water resources and the effects of climate change.
The Region of Murcia is one of the most affected regions, as its high agricultural activity means that the demand for water is greater than the amount of fresh water available. Therefore, it is necessary to develop sustainable strategies to prevent and mitigate these situations of water scarcity and drought, ensuring the quantity and quality of this resource in the future. Faced with this situation, advanced treatment of groundwater that has been contaminated is a sustainable alternative to the use of conventional freshwater sources.
A commitment to the circular economy and sustainable irrigation in Murcia
To this end, emphasis is placed on the following milestones and objectives, to be projected within the framework of the Aguas de Murcia strategic plan and the Next Generation funds:
